January 2025 Update
One of my goals for the year is to keep in the habit of writing for The Road to Limina. Besides any changes that might come from playtesting feedback, the big goal is adding additional Backgrounds over time. This is the first of these planned updates. Relatedly, at some point this game will probably move behind a solid paywall. I have very mixed emotions about how I treat this hobby of mine, being resistant to the business impulses that turn it into an obligation rather than an artistic outlet, etc. On the other hand, I'd like a lil pocket money, y'know? We'll see.
Changelog below:
Added pagination.
Renamed classes to backgrounds. Why not. They are “Classes” in the way we recognize what that means in RPG terms, but they also have provide pretty direct character history.
Added 3 Backgrounds, bringing the total to 18: Faction Champion, Vár Angos, and Torn Author. I have another 18 planned, for a full d66 table. I don’t like random rolling for backgrounds myself, but it’s a bit of a tradition, and 36 Backgrounds is a nice hearty selection. One day, if.
Minor changes to existing backgrounds. Fallen Crusader, Wayward Merchant, Sacrificial Mage, Blood-Cursed, Faction Idol (became Faction Dancer), Unsettled Scholar, Tragicker. Think that’s it. Unsettled Scholar is playing with resource generation, which makes me aware of how tenuous the “balance’ of the economy is. Getting wealth in RPGs is such a cultural relic, and I’m mostly inclined not to include it, but it does add some juice to the longterm drama of the journey. I’ll see how I feel about it and if anyone ever discovers it feels bad in play.
Speaking of which, I originally wanted the game to be pretty “low fantasy,” with limited access to magic and everyone getting strange, pseudo-magical abilities. I feel like the more I flesh out Backgrounds and try to add in interesting advances, the more I default to various outlandish magical ideas. Straying from an original concept is one of the recurring things I feel myself doing with every project. Dunno what to do about that.
Added more adversaries. Fixed example adversaries to have Wants, now actually following what I said to do in the NPC section.
Minor adjustments to track lengths on example adversaries. Trying to remember that a basic action does 1 tick, a boosted action does 2. It’s something I’ll keep an eye on. I’ll have to see how that feels in play to really know if fights drag on too much, not enough, etc.
Removed swords.
